Here are a few small bowls I completed for the second assignment in my ceramics class. The instructions were to concentrate on the foot of a bowl while thinking about how to tie it in with the rim later on. I had a hard time with this assignment since I have never really given any thought to the foot before. I have no idea where the idea of a ruffled edge came from, but I found myself doing the same thing over and over again on every bowl I made without realizing it until I was done. I couldn’t believe it when I lined them up (there were 8 of them) and they all looked like they were wearing tutus – not exactly the effect I was aiming for!

I really like the middle bowl. It looks as if it’s beginning a Namaste pose. Maybe it’s just because I’m so into Yoga these days.. but that’s what I see
Hope that your show went well today…I was thinking of you driving in that snow this morning!
I had something similar happen when I was making these swirly ceramic boxes. If they were sitting next to each other out of order, they looked unique. One day I spent a few minutes lining them all up side by side to discover every one was the shape of the letter “S”.
Hi Kim, glad to hear I’m not the only one caught doing a repetitive design unintentionally!
I wonder what would happen if you designed the foot in such way that it smoothly blended into the body of the work, so that instead of tutus you had feet. in the human body the foot doesn’t stand separate from the rest of the leg; it transitions via ankle etc. Yours, so far, don’t look to me to be transitioning, but to be totally distinct, stand-alone elements that then have the body tacked onto them.
Hi Frank, I may have done something along those lines in the 3rd assignment – at least I think I’ve made some progress on how to integrate the two elements in a more pleasing way. I’ll put up the post in a while.
Yes these are quite exquisite. It looks like a coming out party. Free and uninhibited! You are certainly growing leaps and bounds, keep it up, have fun and let the mud fly. Ha!
